In his recent document, the Motu Proprio ‘Summorum Pontificum’, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI made it quite clear that the old form of Mass was never abolished, and that any Priest of the Latin Rite may celebrate it, privately or publicly, even on a Sunday when requested.
In accordance with this teaching it is anticipated that Mass in the traditional rite will be celebrated occasionally. Books with the text of Holy Mass in both Latin & English are available for you, and also leaflets with the text of the prayers & readings.
“If you wish to hear Mass as it should be heard, you must follow with eye, heart and mouth all that happens at the Altar. Further, you must pray with the Priest the holy words said by him in the Name of Christ and which Christ says by him.” : ---------------Pope Saint Pius X
We belong to the Latin or Roman Rite. This Rite has two forms: the new Rite (‘Novus Ordo’ or ‘ordinary form’) and the old Rite (‘Usus Antiquior’, or the ‘extra-ordinary form) Love, respect and pray The Holy Mass !
Traditional Rite Celebrations every Friday evening. Note that during Lent this celebration will take place at 6.15pm.
NB:
* at Traditional Mass we KNEEL to receive Holy Communion (the infirm may stand, of course)
* Communion is received on the tongue. (do NOT answer ‘Amen’)
* do not neglect to stay for a few minutes after Mass, to offer your prayers of thanksgiving.
Some have said this about our celebrating the Traditional Rite of Holy Mass. Of course, they’re ill-informed --- the Pope reminds us that what was once revered as holy, cannot all of a sudden cease to be holy !!! Indeed, rather than turning the clock back, we are looking to the future. It is a fact that the seminaries for Priests to celebrate the Traditional Rite are full, and have waiting lists for entry, whereas those for the new Rite (which we celebrate daily) are ‘empty’ in comparison.
Some say this about our celebrating the Traditional Rite of Holy Mass. Of course, they’re ill-informed --- people don’t say that about a pilot flying a plane when they go on holiday, do they ?! The Priest faces east, the Tabernacle, Jerusalem, the empty Tomb and Calvary, to lead us the way we must go. Even according to the Missal of the modern Rite of Mass, it is presumed that the Priest says Mass this way--- for he is instructed several times to turn to face the people to say something.
Some say this about our celebrating the Traditional Rite of Holy Mass. Of course they’re ill-informed --- there are the same number of responses in our Old Rite as there are in the New Rite, more or less.
Some say this about our celebrating the Traditional Rite of Holy Mass. They’re ill-informed of course. The simple fact is, the Pope, the Successor of Peter the Vicar of Christ on earth, encourages us to do so. If other Priests are ignorant of Papal teaching, or their knowledge and love of the Sacred Liturgy is wanting, that is indeed a problem. However, if they reject the Church’s teaching from some sense of stubbornness or pride, we must pray for them, for their first duty is the care of souls.
